Concentration

Longline: After surviving the Holocaust, an octogenarian couple is forced to flee persecution a second time during Argentina's Dirty War, but when their only daughter is killed, they must channel their grief and find meaning with those around them to rebuild a life still worth living.

Esther and Isaac Gasman, Holocaust survivors who built a new life in Argentina, are once again uprooted when their journalist daughter Marina sends them to New York for their safety during the Dirty War. Staying behind to report on the atrocities, Marina becomes one of Los Desaparecidos, The Disappeared, forcing her parents to grieve not only her loss, but also the echo of their families destroyed in World War II.

Now in their seventies and eighties, Esther and Isaac live in hiding as undocumented immigrants in the public housing projects of lower Manhattan. Isolated and impoverished, they pawn away their heirlooms piece by piece, while Esther begins tentative connections with Zella Ray, a Caribbean neighbor who has weathered her own share of loss.

When Isaac is injured during a robbery gone wrong, Esther discovers the neighborhood’s violence firsthand, along with a backpack filled with cocaine and cash hidden by local teenagers. Pursued by dangerous dealers, the couple faces a harrowing choice: stay silent and survive in fear of deportation, or risk everything and fight back.

With the unlikely help of Zella Ray, Jordan – a local boy tied to the crime – and members of their community, Esther and Isaac confront the dealers in a desperate bid to reclaim safety. In standing together, they find resilience, solidarity, and a fragile hope that even in the shadow of loss, life can still hold meaning.
